What You’ll Experience

Join us in our artisan workshop, nestled in the peaceful town of Kamiyama, Tokushima.
Here, you will experience the timeless Japanese craft of Magewappa — a bentwood bento box — created using a method that has been passed down for over 1,000 years.

This authentic technique uses no chemicals or adhesives — only the natural qualities of the wood and the skilled hands of the artisan bring each box to life.

Working with fragrant local cedar, you will carefully bend, shape, and assemble your own unique bento box under expert guidance.
It is a slow, mindful process — a moment to connect with traditional Japanese aesthetics and craftsmanship, and to create a lasting memory of your journey.

Experience includes:

  • An introduction to the history and cultural significance of Magewappa
  • A demonstration and hands-on experience of this 1,000-year-old traditional technique
  • Wood bending and shaping process
  • Step-by-step guidance to craft your own bento box
  • Light refreshments and local tea
  • Each participant will take home one handcrafted Magewappa bentwood bento box.

Who is it for?

  • Travelers seeking a truly unique cultural experience
  • Lovers of craftsmanship, design, and handmade traditions
  • Families, couples, and solo travelers
  • Those wishing to create a beautiful, lasting souvenir of Japan

No prior experience needed — all instructions are beginner-friendly and provided in simple English.
